Cantabria Wins the 2nd Flight at the 2025 Spanish Inter-Regional U-14 Championship – “XIII Memorial Blanca Mayor”

Day 4

The Cantabrian Junior Team delivered an outstanding performance at the Spanish Inter-Regional Under-14 Championship – “XIII Memorial Blanca Mayor”, held from October 9 to 12 at La Valmuza Golf (Salamanca), claiming the 2nd Flight title after defeating Navarra by an overall score of 3.5 to 1.5.

The match began with the morning foursomes. The boys’ pair Héctor Cabarga González and Hugo Cabarga González lost their match, while the girls’ duo Marina González Ortega and Sara Cirajas Calvo secured an important 3&2 win, leveling the contest before the afternoon singles.

In the singles session, the Cantabrian players showed great skill and determination. Lucía González Ortega earned the first individual point with a solid 6&4 victory, and Darío Sainz Hergueta extended the lead with a 5&3 win. Ismael Mateo battled in a tight match that ended all square, contributing a decisive half point to seal the overall triumph.

With this result, Cantabria was crowned 2nd Flight Champion, capping off an excellent week of golf and demonstrating the talent and unity of the team.

Day 3

On October 11, the Cantabrian team enjoyed another great day at the championship, defeating Aragón by a narrow 3–2 margin in a thrilling and hard-fought encounter.

The day began with the foursomes, where the pairs Héctor and Hugo Cabarga González and Marina González Ortega with Sara Cirajas Calvo showed high-level play. Although the Cabarga brothers fell 5/4, the Cantabrian girls’ duo claimed a dominant 8/6 victory, leveling the match and keeping their hopes alive.

In the singles, Lucía González Ortega secured a brilliant 8/6 win over María Ares García, and Darío Sainz Hergueta prevailed 2/1 against Alejandro Lahoz Marquesán. Ismael Mateo Sánchez fought hard until the end but narrowly lost his match 3/1 to Bruno Lázaro Hernández.

With this victory, the Cantabrian team advanced to the next stage with confidence and enthusiasm, continuing to represent the Cantabrian Golf Federation with pride in this prestigious national event that brings together Spain’s best young golfers.

Following this success, Cantabria faced Navarra in the grand final, a thrilling clash to decide the 2nd Flight Champion of this year’s championship.

Day 2

On October 10, 2025, during the second round of the Spanish Inter-Regional U-14 Championship – “XIII Memorial Blanca Mayor”, the Cantabrian team put on a brilliant performance against Castilla-La Mancha, winning convincingly by 4–1.

In the morning foursomes, Héctor and Hugo Cabarga were defeated 5/4 by the Manchegan pair Cañizares / Herranz, while Marina González and Sara Cirajas shone with a solid 6/4 victory, leveling the match.

In the afternoon singles, the competition remained close. Lucía González and Darío Sainz both fought hard, each earning narrow 1-up wins, while Ismael Mateo added a strong 4/3 victory, securing the decisive point to close the tie 4–1 in favor of Cantabria.

With this solid performance, the Cantabrian team approached the third day of the championship with optimism, ready to face the Aragón team.

Day 1

On October 9, 2025, the Cantabrian players began their participation in the Spanish Inter-Regional Under-14 Championship – “XIII Memorial Blanca Mayor”, held at La Valmuza Golf Course from October 9–12. The team, made up of Ismael Mateo, Darío Sainz, Hugo Cabarga, Héctor Cabarga, Sara Cirajas, and Marina and Lucía González, competed with determination to secure a solid position among the autonomous communities.

In the overall team standings, Cantabria recorded +35 (126 counting strokes) after the first round, ranking ninth among participating federations and thus entering the Second Flight for the match-play phase.

Individual results:

  • Ismael Mateo and Lucía González scored +3 (75 strokes), tied for 21st place.
  • Sara Cirajas posted +9 (81 strokes), finishing 53rd.
  • Darío Sainz and Marina González carded +10 (82 strokes), around 64th place.
  • Hugo Cabarga shot +23 (95 strokes), placing 108th.
  • Héctor Cabarga finished with +30 (95 strokes), ranked 117th.

The match-play phase began the following day, with Cantabria competing in the Second Flight and facing Castilla-La Mancha in their first head-to-head matchup. This format brings extra excitement and strategy to each hole, rewarding focus and composure at decisive moments.
