Why do a third of golfers quit golf?

It is not the price. It’s not the difficulty. The silent enemy of golf is… wasted time. According to a study by the United States Golf Association, 1 in 3 golfers quit the sport because of long, tedious and frustrating rounds. And the funny thing: 70% of players don’t know why they play slowly.

Is it the fault? It’s not just the amateur who loses balls in the trees. The real problem lies in unnecessary routines, as slow as they are unconscious, that even professional players repeat.

At the RBC Heritage 2023, Patrick Cantlay took more than three minutes to hit a single shot. His slowness was so notorious that Brooks Koepka did not hesitate to criticise him publicly. And no wonder: the rounds took up to five hours, ruining the experience for everyone.

But all is not lost. There is a practical and effective solution: the 90-second method, created by coach Dave Pelz and applied on the Corn Fairy Tour with surprising results.

  • 30 seconds to analyse your shot while your teammates are playing.
  • 30 seconds to choose your club and make your decision.
  • 30 seconds to execute your swing.
  • Lost your ball? Don’t spend more than 90 seconds looking for it.

Bryson DeChambeau applied this technique and managed to shave 15 minutes off a round. A simple change that can transform your playing experience (and that of those around you), because playing faster not only makes golf more agile, it makes it more enjoyable and accessible to everyone. And who knows… maybe with 90 seconds per round, we’ll win back the love of those golfers who almost threw in the towel.
