Third Round
Male
With favorable weather conditions, the final round of the 2025 Spanish Under-16 Male Championship was played on Sunday, May 4, at the Real Club de Golf La Coruña. José Antonio Salas López finished in third place after a playoff between the three players tied for first place in the tournament.
After the first nine holes (par 36), the Cantabrian player was leading the tournament by one stroke. On the back nine, despite a double bogey on hole 11, he reached hole 15 again with a one-stroke lead.
However, a double bogey on hole 17 followed by a bogey on hole 18 left his card with a score of 76 (+4), resulting in a three-way tie at 222 (+6) for first place between Marbella’s Samuel Love, San Sebastián’s Pablo Basterra, and our own José Antonio Salas.
The playoff was decided on the first hole in favor of the Marbella player, with the runner-up title shared between the San Sebastián player and José Antonio Salas.
A shame, but it does not diminish the excellent level of play shown by the Cantabrian golfer.
Congratulations!!
Female
With changing weather conditions, the final round of the 2025 Spanish Under-16 Female Championship was held on Sunday, May 4, at Golf Xaz (Oleiros, La Coruña). María Martínez Navarro was unable to improve her starting position.
Representing Santa Marina, she finished the championship tied for 59th place, with a round of 83 (+11) and a total of 237 (+21) strokes, far from the leading positions.
Second Round
Male
With calm weather, the second round of the 2025 Spanish Under-16 Male Championship took place on Saturday, May 3, at the Real Club de Golf La Coruña. José Antonio Salas López, who teed off at hole 1, turned in an outstanding round, especially in the front nine, and posted the best score of the day at the club house.
The Santander player carded a 70 (-2), totaling 146 (+2) strokes, positioning himself second going into the final round, just one stroke behind Valencian Juan Miro, who led the tournament with 145 (+1).
Female
With more sunny spells than clouds, a light and variable wind, and pleasant temperatures, the second round of the 2025 Spanish Under-16 Female Championship was held on Saturday, May 3, at Golf Xaz (Oleiros, La Coruña). María Martínez Navarro was the only Cantabrian to make the cut for the final day.
Representing Santa Marina, she scored 75 (+3), climbing 12 spots to tie for 38th place with a total of 154 (+12) strokes.
Neither Lucía González Ortega nor Elsa Gil Prada, who were unlucky from the first shot, were able to show their full potential in the two rounds played.
Best wishes to Lucia and Elsa, and lots of luck to María in the last round of the tournament.
Taking advantage of a meeting held in La Coruña with the presidents of the regional federations, attended by Juan Carlos Alba, both he and Miguel Ángel Raba (Sports Director) congratulated and encouraged the Cantabrian players.
First Round
Male
Fog delayed the start times, rain fell intermittently (heavy at times), and a lightning storm suspension interrupted play in the already tough and heavy course conditions at the Real Club de Golf La Coruña. Despite this, José Antonio Salas López, who teed off from hole 10 during the heaviest rain, posted a reasonable score given the difficult conditions.
The Cantabrian player turned in a 76 (+4) at the clubhouse, tied for 14th place going into the second round.
Good luck!
Female
With partly cloudy skies, some intermittent rain, no wind, and pleasant temperatures, the first of three rounds of the 2025 Spanish Under-16 Female Championship began on Friday, May 2, at the damp Golf Xaz course (Oleiros, La Coruña).
The Cantabrian players did not perform up to their usual standards on a course that demands maximum precision. The heavy terrain particularly affected players with less driving power.
Positions and scores:
- Tied 50th: María Martínez Navarro with 79 (+7) strokes.
- Tied 74th: Lucía González Ortega with 82 (+10) strokes.
- Tied 84th: Elsa Gil Prada with 87 (+15) strokes.
The round on Saturday, May 3, will be crucial, as the cut will be made after it, allowing only the top 60 and ties to compete in the final round.
Best of luck!
