Ryan Fox has won the 2022 Seve Ballesteros Award after being chosen as Player of the Year by his teammates on the DP World Tour.
At the beginning of 2022 Fox was proclaimed the winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and achieved his second victory on the DP World Tour.
Following his two wins, Fox achieved four second-place finishes at the Soudal Open, Dutch Open, Horizon Irish Open and Nedbank Golf Challenge, as well as four other top-10 finishes.
His great results positioned him for the first time among the top 50 in the World Ranking.
«Last year I thought I might have a chance, but other golfers like Rory, Matt or Jon Rahm played very well, especially at the end of the year. When Keith Pelley told me about it, he surprised me and made me very happy. That your colleagues are the ones who vote for you makes this award something more special, “said the New Zealander.
The trophy was presented by Severiano Ballesteros children Javier and Carmen Ballesteros, who traveled to the Hero Dubai Desert Classic for the event. A tournament that precisely, his father conquered in 1992.
Since 2017 the trophy has been named after the legendary Spanish player Severiano Ballesteros, who was the first European to win the Masters in 1980, repeating the triumph three years later. The title of the award recognizes the legacy of Ballesteros to the world of golf.
«Seve is a golf icon and I, who am a fan of this sport, knew his history. But possibly I didn’t understand it well then, coming from New Zealand I couldn’t see the real influence he had here. It’s amazing to hear the stories of some players who competed with him. Having my name on his award is surreal to me. It’s wonderful to be a part of a bit of history” Fox added.
Seve Ballesteros, who designed our course at Golf Santa Marina, was one of the most talented golfers in the history of golf and his game moved the entire world. There has not been a player who has done more for the popularization of golf in Europe.
The European Tour considers it a privilege to ensure that his figure is kept alive through this award.
Javier Ballesteros, Seve’s eldest son, said: “It makes me very happy that Ryan has won this award. It’s important that he got two wins and he played such a full season on the DP World Tour, and he’s a fantastic guy. For us it is a pride that our father names this award, it is a way of keeping his legacy alive ».
